The Washington, DC Police Memorial & Museum has been honored by the DC Preservation League with a District of Columbia Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation. The award was presented at a ceremony at DAR Constitution Hall on November 14, 2023.  The award category is for Design and Construction in recognition of the organization’s work to restore the DC Police Memorial, located in front of the Daly building, the historic headquarters of the MPD, at 300 Indiana Avenue, NW.

The ceremony was the 20th Anniversary Celebration of the District of Columbia Awards for Excellence in Historic Preservation. and was hosted by the Daughters of the American Revolution with awards presented in the categories of  Design and Construction; Volunteerism; the State Historic Preservation Officer’s Award; and the Historic Preservation Review Board Chair’s Award.

The Memorial Fountain was built in 1942 by citizens and the business community of Washington, DC to honor all the DC MPD officers who have died in the line of duty since the department was founded in 1861.  Sadly, it had fallen into disrepair with crumbling concrete and other major problems and was in need of restoration.  It took 11 years and the involvement of many of our core supporting organizations, but on May 1, 2023, we achieved our goal to renovate the Memorial Fountain. In addition to repairing the fountain, we also built a brand new Memorial Wall, with the names of 125 DC MPD officers.

Consigli Construction Co., Inc. was the company that handled the restoration and construction portions of the Memorial project. including the preservation and installation of exposed aggregate concrete pioneered by artisan John J. Earley, a pioneer in the use of architectural concrete from Manassas, Va.
