Following the  April 4,1968, assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Washington,D.C.and a number of  other American cities erupted in violent riots and looting.  It has been estimated that nearly one thousand fires were deliberately set during the following days of civil unrest.  These are photographs from the Metropolitan Police Museum archives and have not been previously released.
