35 years ago this week, Flight 90 crashed into the 14th Street Bridge and into the Potomac River shortly after take-off from Washington National Airport, killing 78 people. Seven vehicles traveling on the bridge were struck by the plane as it fell into the freezing water.

Traffic on and around the bridge that day made rescue efforts difficult. Among the rescue efforts was a U.S. Park Police helicopter which assisted survivors.
